Alex DeForest’s self-portrait with light are a very unusual take on two lines of work we’re are used to normally seeing. The hybrid between light painting and self-portraiture in Alex’s work is able to convey a great deal of emotions and produce of series of powerful images. He takes the shots while sitting in a dark room by himself and moving a light source near his face or body.
As far as process goes, Alex says that he enjoys going into a store and buying generic flashlights, which he then adapts for the specific purpose of his self-portraits. Oftentimes he would take a toy that has LED lights in it, take it apart and use those components as a light source in his paintings.
Although the images look carefully planned, the author enjoys being spontaneous with the shots and “winging” them as he goes.
